This trip was exactly what our Spring needed...sunshine and friend time! It was a dream come true, really. I have missed California since childhood and I've missed Kimber (so much!) since we moved to Kansas. A week on the beach with the Eastmans was almost too good to be true. And then the Levanders joined in! It was just so great.
On the first day, Kimber showed us around a bit in Carlsbad and Oceanside. We saw seals at the docks and then we all hiked out onto the jetty. Right after we took an adorable group picture, a giant wave rose up and crashed on the rocks right where Reed and Nixon were standing. It was a crazy moment...I was scared they were going to get washed right off the rocks! They hung on though, and just laughed it off - brave boys!
The rest of the week was spent finding fun spots on different beaches...setting up "camp" for our big crew and enjoying the sun and the sand and the sea. The little kids built things and buried things but mostly did a lot of hole digging. The big kids boogie boarded most days - they were so tough (it was cold!). Everybody lounged and chatted and played different forms of ball games (paddle tennis and football, even baseball). We also rented bikes and scooters once in a while. I was just in Heaven on the beach. I could have stayed forever and the days never seemed long enough! Scott would get bored at times, though...he led all the men and older kids off at one point to drive racing go-karts (which was a high-point for them, I think). One evening we braved the chilly weather to stay on the beach after dark and have a picnic dinner and roast marshmallows. We crammed so many memories into one incredible week and did it with our dearest friends. I hope this will be the beginning of an endless tradition for all of us.
